Elk Information

The elk (Cervus elaphus) belongs to the deer family Cervidae. It is the second largest member of the deer family behind moose. This animal can be found in North America, especially in the western areas and in mountain regions. Elk are also called wapiti. This word means "white rump" in the Shawnee language. Elk live in a variety of habitats. Their habitats include woodlands, mountain meadows, plains, swamps and coniferous forests. The elk is 4 to 5 feet tall at the shoulder. Bulls weigh between 700 and 900 lbs. Cows usually weigh 500 to 600 lbs. Male elk have large antlers. These antlers are shed every year.
